Through Facebook a friend and I discovered that a new bar/Burger/wing/pizza place, the Pub Hub, would be opening today at 4PM with drink and food specials. If we only knew! Erin was the very first customer (obviously free beer for life, right?) and I met her there shortly after. I started with a BrewDog 5AM Saint and some delicious onion strings and jalapeno chips. The batter was light and flavorful and the ranch sauce was terrific, should have asked what was different.
The Beer:
BrewDog 5AM Saint
Brewed by: Brew Dog Ltd., Fraserburgh, Scotland
ABV: 5%
Style: American Amber/Red Ale
The Taste:
The beer pours an amber color with a huge white head. Smells of the forest and citrus, and definitely hops. The taste is very hoppy but balanced with malts and a slight caramel flavor. I likes this beer a lot, it had a medium body and definitely some lingering taste. I still want to try the BrewDog Stone collaboration, too!
The Beer:
Gonzo Imperial Porter
Brewed by: Flying Dog Brewery, Maryland
ABV: 7.8% on the bottle (9.2 on the website?)
Style: Baltic Porter
The Taste:
The beer pours an almost black color with a half-inch mocha colored head. You can smell coffee, chocolate and toasty malts. It has a delicious warm taste, a big body and I love the chocolate and caramel flavors. Definitely my favorite beer of the night.
The Beer:
Rahr’s Blonde
Brewed by: Rahr & Son’s Brewery, Fort Worth, Texas
ABV: 4.8%
Style: Munich Style Helles Lager
The Taste:
This is the first of the Rahr & Sons beers I’ve tried, and while I love my Texas beers, I was underwhelmed on this beer’s flavor, not really my style. It pours a very golden color with minimal white head, and smells of hops. The taste was light and hoppy balanced somewhat by malts and very drinkable. It was nothing memorable, but I’m glad I tried the Texas brewery.
After we each had 3 bottled beers, the draft system was finally up and running and our cool bartender Mike was giving out free draft beers. I had an Allagash White, that I’ve had previously, and I also scored a Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. The best part was they were free, and when we asked for our tabs, apparently so were all the beers, except for 1. bwhahahhahaha. AWESOME. what should have been probably a $30 tab for myself was $11! Granted this was their grand opening day, so it’s not like it will happen again- lesson learned try to hit up the places when they’re first opening. I can’t wait to go back to see the rest of the 60 or so taps in full working order. Their bottle selection was impressive for the first day and I hope that continues.

Leslie – somehow your answer slipped by “the judges” (me) on Friday. It was right on, of course and just a shade behind the winning first respondent. We’d love to send you something of honorable mention Hopstar status. Given your location, a free pint might not be practical. Can we send you a shirt? (size please) &/or other Flat12 swag. Like your site. Way cool. ; ) Need to check out this free beer movement thing.
Best
Bob
