Review: Guinness Foreign Extra Stout

November 1, 2010

I have had Guinness Draught several times, and quite enjoy it, but I also don’t drink too much of any one beer because life is too short. So when I heard that the States were finally getting Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, which has been in other countries for a while now, I wanted to check it out. Beer Advocate has the article on it’s release which was October 1st, but I am just now seeing it in the store.

The Beer:
Foreign Extra Stout
Brewed by: Guinness Ltd, Dublin, Ireland
ABV: 7.5%
Style: Foreign/ Export Stout

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout

The Taste:
FES pours a black color with a creamy head. It smells like malts, chocolate and a little hops. It is creamy and full-bodied, and tastes like it smells, but I get more hops on the aftertaste, and it definitely has more hops than the Draught. I really enjoyed this Guinness and glad that it’s here in the states now for our enjoyment. It comes in 4 packs so you don’t have to have a full 6 pack of it either. I would give it a solid A, it is rich and creamy, but very drinkable.

I have a 4 pack of FES sitting in the cellar waiting for various tasting plans I have in mind, and of coruse the fact that as winter draws in, what beer is better in the depths of dark and cold than a good stout?
